Tyvek is a registered trademark of DuPont, who created the material in 1955. Tyvek is commonly used in many industries such as on the sides of buildings during construction due to its extreme durability, and for wristbands at festivals, but perhaps most notable is its use in the medical industry. Tyvek is a paper-like material that consists of woven plastic fibers. These fibers are bound together with heat and pressure to make a sheet of Tyvek which can be easily cut to desired sizes. Tyvek’s value in the medical industry stems from the fact that its porosity allows for sterilization gasses to flow through it, but pathogens cannot. This allows medical devices to be sealed in Tyvek pouches and then sterilized afterward. The Tyvek needs to be labeled with identifying information of the medical device under it and this is best done by printing directly to the Tyvek itself. This is where Pliant Packaging comes in! We offer specialized thermal transfer ribbon to print unique device identification and other product information for medical devices.
